Rovers back down to earth
After all the euphoria of Rovers opening day win at Derby they crashed back down to earth with a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in the first round of the Carling cup.
Both sides made quite a few changes from their opening day fixtures. Rovers made five changes giving full debuts to Chambers, Van Nieuwstadt and Spicer.
In a fairly even game both sides made chances, Mark Wilson had Rovers best effort of the first half when forcing Pilkington into a save from a long range effort. Gareth Roberts also hit the top of the bar with a free kick from just outside the area.
Neil Mackenzie had County's best chance when he forced Sullivan into a good save, Mackenzie's powerful free kick was tipped over the bar.
Doncaster had the better of the opening of the second half without ever really troubling the County back line.
The game changed when the home side introduced Myles Weston just after the hour. His introduction sprung County into action and he gave them the injection of pace they were looking for.
County wasted the best chance of normal time with three minutes remaining. Rob Edwards found himself space inside the six yard box only to fire well over.
Extra time got under way and county looked like they were happy to settle for penalties by going with just one upfront.
In an uneventful first half it was looking increasingly like a penalty shoot out was on the cards. The game was eventually won in the opening seconds of the second half of extra time. Weston was put in the clear and he drove the ball past the hapless Sullivan in to the Rovers net.
This sprung Rovers into life but they never really threatened the County goal.
A disappointing defeat for Rovers after Saturday's great start to the season. A lot of fans will be happy that we can now solely concentrate on the League but a good little cup run can bring in lots of extra revenue to the club.
