DRFC - Doncaster suffer heavy defeat

Bristol City
4 - 1
Doncaster Rovers

Ashton Gate

Attendance: 15,960

Rovers suffered their worst defeat of the season at Ashton Gate after a woeful second half performance.

Darren Byfield replaced the injured Gareth Taylor and got a good reception from the Ashton Gate faithful, it was a shame that a number of Rovers fans couldn`t do the same for Michael Mcindoe who would have the last laugh.

The first half was quite an even contest, Bristol City controlled the first 20 minutes of the game before Doncaster started to play their passing game and create a few chances.

Bristol could have taken the lead as early as the third minute when two Bristol strikers found themselves up against only one defender but Adebola headed wide from six yards.

City were controlling the game and Ivan Sproule was a consistent thorn in the Rovers side.

The home side seemed to be happy to have a shot from anywhere, something that I hope Rovers can take a lesson from!
Skuse had a shot from 30 yards that Sullivan at full stretch could only parry away.

Sproule twice was put clear down the right but both times dragged his shot wide of the post when in a good position.

Byfield was looking quite dangerous whenever he had the ball at his feet but couldn`t quite get a clear shot on goal for Rovers.

Lewis Guy was having a good afternoon against Bradley Orr and should have done better on a few occasions when finding space to have a shot on goal.
Unbelievably late in the half he decided to square the ball when one on one with the keeper and City were able to clear.

Half time came with the scores still level and quite an even contest was taking place.

Bristol decided to replace Bradley Orr at half time, he had been given a torrid time in the first half by Guy with fans favourite Marvin Elliott. City were soon into their stride and Rovers conceded for the second week in a row inside the first minute of the restart.

City found acres of space down the middle and after one lunging tackle by a Rovers defender Maynard was put clear with only Sullivan to beat, the Rovers keeper took out the City forward and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.

Ex Rovers favourite Michael Mcindoe strode up to take the spot kick and drilled the ball straight down the centre giving Sullivan no chance.

Worse was to follow when Matt Mills went off shortly after the goal, Mills had been having a good tussle with Dele Adebola during the first half but limped off the pitch to be replaced by Lockwood.

Byfield could have equalised shortly afterwards when he created a bit of space in the City box but the ball took a big deflection off the City defender and went out for a corner.

From the resulting corner City broke and after good work between Maynard and Adebola, Maynard smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Worse was to follow shortly afterwards when sloppy defending allowed Ivan Sproule to score a goal his performance had thoroughly deserved.

Rovers finally found out how to score a goal when a coolly placed shot from Richie Wellens on the edge of the area found the bottom corner.

Rovers still felt they could get something from the game but this was to be short lived when sloppier defending allowed Michael Mcindoe to get his second and City`s fourth.

Rovers afternoon was summed up late in the game after they somehow managed to miss from two yards after good work down the right hand side from Coppinger.

A disappointing second half performance with some very sloppy defending, we seemed to lose our way at the back after the withdrawal of Matt Mills and I hope his injury isn`t too serious.

Really need to start finding the back of the net. Do you think Hayter is cut out for this league?
21/09/2008 10:32:00
I think Hayter and Guy need a rest. It was so frustrating watching us play the ball about until their final third and not taking shots on goal.
21/09/2008 13:59:00
How did Byfield play?
21/09/2008 22:00:00
Send Hayter back to bournemouth on loan they will sort him out

Byfield had a few good touches but you can see he's not fully match fit. A few more game sunder his belt and I think he will be ok. What was more impressive was the fact his misses Jamelia came and sat with all the fans.

Forget thisw result and move on.
