Carroll goal sinks Rovers

Doncaster went down to a solitary Andy Carroll goal in an entertaining game at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers made two changes to the side that drew with Sheffield United at the weekend, Billy Sharp and Dean Shiels replaced Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and James Coppinger.

In an entertaining first half, which ended goalless, Andy Carroll wasted a great early chance for the visitors but blazed over the bar when in a good position.

Billy Sharp had Rovers first real chance but Steve Harper saved his shot.
Sharp had an even better chance on the half hour but his weak shot was easy for Harper.

Carroll had another good chance but his shot was well saved by Sullivan.

Newcastle took the lead on the hour when a poor ball by Mark Wilson in midfield was pounced on and put through to Andy Carroll who slotted the ball past Sullivan.

Rovers thought they had equalised within minutes but Billy Sharp`s effort was ruled out for offside in what looked a very close call.

Woods was next to chance his arm for Rovers but his shot cleared the bar.

At the other end Kevin Nolan`s shot was saved by Sullivan.

The referee added four minutes of injury time, Billy Sharp had Rovers only chance on goal but his shot was saved by Harper.

Despite playing well Rovers couldn`t find an equaliser against Newcastle who continue their march back to the Premiership.

Doncaster deserved at least a draw.

Still can't work out how we lost this game, the linesman must have taken a brbe, he didn't want to put the flag up in the first half and hen couldn't keep it down in the second, there was no way Billy Sharp was offside for his goal. Expecting another report going in from John Ryan!
