Rejuvenated Rovers win again

Rejuvenated Doncaster Rovers go into the international break outside of the bottom three after coming from behind to claim all three points at Peterborough United.

Dean Saunders first week with the club has seen them claim seven points from a possible nine.

Saunders gave Billy Sharp his first start since the opening day of the season but there was no place in the squad for new signing Pascal Chimbonda.

Peterborough came into the game on the back of a good win at Portsmouth in midweek and they started much the better with George Boyd and Emile Sinclair both firing wide in the opening five minutes.

It was no surprise when they took the lead on nineteen minutes when Grant McCann`s fiercely struck left foot shot found the top corner.

The same player came close to making it two when his free kick, from a similar position to his goal, had Neil Sullivan at full stretch.

The home side dominated the first half, Boyd fired wide from close range and Sullivan made another good save to deny Sinclair.

The second half started in pretty much the same vain with Lee Frecklington and McCann going close to doubling the lead.

Rovers got back into the game totally against the run of play when John Oster teed up Brian Stock who fired past Paul Jones in the Peterborough goal from 25 yards.

The goal gave Rovers the lift they needed and Jon Parkin came close to scoring his first goal for the club when his shot from outside the area came back off the underside of the bar and to safety.

Simon Gillett then fired wide as Rovers were enjoying their best spell of the game.

Rovers turned the game on its head when Kyle Bennett showed persistence down the left and he won the tussle with Peterborough defender Ryan Bennett before he prodded past the goalkeeper from close range.

Peterborough came back at Rovers and they twice hit the post in the final twenty minutes with Tommy Rowe and Paul Taylor both seeing efforts come back off the woodwork.

After last weeks winner against Crystal Palace, when the ball took a wicked deflection, Rovers are now having that little bit of luck that has deserted them all year.

The win was Rovers first away win of the season and their first on the road since March 1st.

Rovers now go into the international break in twentieth position after climbing five places in the table with this win.

The international break now gives Dean Saunders two weeks to work with his squad before the televised clash with Leeds United at the Keepmoat on October 14th.
