Defensive frailties continue to cost Rovers

Doncaster Rovers went down to a third straight defeat, conceding three goals in the process for the third game in a row, as they lost 3-1 at Derby County.

The scoreline was harsh on Rovers who troubled Derby who kept up their great run with a seventh straight win.

Once again, defensive errors were Rovers downfall. Luke McCullough and Enda Stevens got in each other`s way and Chris Martin pounced to set up Jamie Ward to fire the home side ahead.

It wasn`t a good afternoon for McCullough who gave away a penalty in the first half when he dragged down Martin but Rovers goalkeeper Ross Turnbull reprieved the defender with a good save from Martin.

Richie Wellens and Theo Robinson both had chances for Rovers. Wellens stung the hands of Lee Grant with a fierce shot in the first half and Robinson had two great chances early in the second half against his former club.

He drove into the side netting before moments later, firing straight at Grant. The second chance was the big turning point in the game as Derby broke and Simon Dawkins cut through the Rovers defence with ease to slot home and double the lead.

Ward almost scored his second of the afternoon for Derby but saw his effort come back off a post and Michael Keane had an effort cleared off the line.

Rovers got a lifeline just past the hour when Jake Buxton headed an Enda Stevens cross into his own net.

Federico Macheda and Mark Duffy both had chances to equalise for Rovers but they were once again undone when Craig Bryson was given too much space and time to slot his effort into the far corner.

It was a disappointing end to a spirited effort from Rovers who must now dust themselves down and prepare for two home games over the festive period.

Keystone Kop defending. Needs Jones back as soon as possible or we need to bring in another centre back.

Not as if anyone can be dropped unless we want to go with a novice 18-year-old.
