Doncaster Rovers booked their place in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought 3-2 win at ten-man Bradford City.

Alfie May opened the scoring for Doncaster and there was first goals for the club for loan signings Rodney Kongolo and Ben Whiteman, with Whiteman scoring the winner with just two minutes remaining of the game.

Bradford were forced to play just under 30 minutes with ten-men after Romain Vincelot was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on May.

Doncaster started the game brightly and they went ahead on 8 minutes when May reacted first after Colin Doyle had saved a John Marquis shot.

Doncaster continued to carry the main threat with Marquis and May both going close to extending the lead.

Bradford started to take control of the first half and Jake Reeves and Timothee Dieng going close just before the half hour.

Bradford levelled ten-minutes before the break when Dominic Poleon beat Danny Andrew before smashing the ball past Ian Lawlor in the Doncaster goal.

The hosts finished the half strongly but couldn`t go ahead as the teams went in level at the break.

The game changed in Doncaster`s favourite just past the hour when Vincelot was shown a straight red card after he appeared to stamp on May having just beaten Vincelot to the ball and referee Darren Drysdale had no hesitation in showing the Bradford man a red card.

Tommy Rowe had a great chance to restore the lead for Doncaster when he was put in behind the Bradford defence but Doyle denied him.

Doncaster went ahead with just under 20 minutes remaining when Kongolo scored at the second attempt after Doyle saved his first effort.

Despite being down to ten-men, Bradford found a way back into the game with six-minutes remaining when substitute Alex Jones fired past Lawlor.

Doncaster won the tie with just two-minutes remaining. Whiteman fired home from the edge of the area after Bradford could only half clear a corner and it was enough to book Doncaster their place in the second round.
