Marosi The Rovers Hero
Attendance: 862 *Doncaster win 4-3 on penalties
Doncaster Rovers beat Grimsby Town 4-3 on penalties in their first group game of the Checkatrade Trophy after the game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Marko Marosi proved to be the Doncaster hero with three consecutive saves, twice to deny Grimsby the win and the extra point.
Harry Cardwell gave Grimsby the lead just before the half hour but Doncaster were level just ten minutes later when Andy Williams smashed the ball home from ten-yards.
No further goals were scored with the game going straight to penalties at the end of 90 minutes.
Grimsby looked on course for the extra point when they scored their opening three penalties through Ben Davies, JJ Hooper and Zak Mills. Harry Middleton had scored Doncaster`s first penalties but Williams then saw his effort hit the bar. Alfie Beestin made it 3-2 under the new ABBA system but Liam Mandeville`s penalty was saved, giving Grimsby two opportunities to win the tie.
Marosi firstly saved Sam Jones penalty and he followed that up by saving Tom Balarinwa`s spot kick.
Craig Alcock levelled for Doncaster and Rodney Kongolo then fired them ahead for the first time when he fired into the roof of the net. Marosi then stood tall to deflect Cardwell`s penalty onto the crossbar before grabbing the ball after it had come down off the line.
Doncaster gain two points from their first game in the group whilst Grimsby come away with one.
In the other game in the group, Scunthorpe United beat the Sunderland development squad 3-1 at Glanford Park to lead the group.
