Doncaster Rovers bowed out of the Carabao Cup but they gave Premier League giants Arsenal a scare at the Emirates.

Arsenal went through 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from Theo Walcott but Doncaster created a number of chances in the second half with Matty Blair going closest when his header hit the crossbar.

The home side dominated for most of the first half with Olivier Giroud seeing an acrobatic effort come back off the crossbar and Alexis Sanchez testing Ian Lawlor with a long-range effort.

Arsenal opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Walcott got in behind the Doncaster defence and he lifted the ball over the advancing Lawlor.

Jack Wilshire forced Lawlor into a full-length save soon afterwards and you expected the floodgates to open but Doncaster grew into the game towards the break with Alfie May firing into the side netting.

Arsenal almost doubled their lead early in the second half when Lawlor did well to save from Walcott, although the officials pointed for a goal kick.

Tommy Rowe had a good chance for Doncaster just past the hour but he scuffed his effort in front of goal.

Doncaster threw on leading goalscorer John Marquis and he had two chances within minutes of coming on but he lacked composure with his efforts, failing to test Ospina in the Arsenal goal.

May and Rowe both got in behind the Arsenal defence for Doncaster but the pace of Maitland-Niles saw the Arsenal defender get back to deny the Doncaster duo.

Doncaster Substitute Liam Mandeville then worked an opening but his shot was deflected just wide and from the resulting corner, Blair saw his header deflected onto the crossbar.

It was to prove to be the final chance for Doncaster, who despite the defeat will leave the Emirates with their heads held high after a tremendous performance.
